Shell reporting: A more efficient process

Shell, one of the UK’s largest companies by market capitalisation, has worked with Friend for four years. Over that period, we’ve helped them transition to producing key components of their extensive reporting suite using the Workiva platform (previously known as Wdesk).

In-platform design: Workiva, a sophisticated reporting platform that connects to a client’s data sources to retrieve ‘master numbers’, is firmly embedded in Shell’s reporting process. Using it to create corporate reports ‘in platform’, rather than as a simple drafting tool, involves some design compromises, but for Shell these are outweighed by the significant improvements in process efficiencies.

Advantage Workiva: There are several benefits for those who use the system. It’s a secure, single source workflow, and users are easily able to see what the final, designed pages will look like from within the system. Multiple users can also edit sections at the same time, version control is strong and timely outputs of final versions (PDF, ESEF) can be delivered. Auditors also like the reassurance that Workiva offers.

Finishing touches: While much can be done within Workiva, complex graphics and charts still need to be produced outside of the system, and additional time is needed after sign-off to prepare files for print.

Digital reporting: Although the software allows for iXBRL tagging and filing of xHTML reports (e.g. for ESEF compliance, and for the SEC), this isn’t truly digital reporting – but it’s a good stepping stone.

Collaboration with Workiva: We work closely with Shell’s account manager at Workiva, which enables us to iron out any problems quickly. We have also adopted certain digital design principles to help the process run more smoothly.
