Crest Nicholson is a FTSE 250 housebuilder with a clear purpose to create sustainable communities where people and nature can thrive. In 2024 the business faced a challenging year, tackling adverse market conditions and legacy operational issues which negatively affected performance.

A new CEO, coming on board in June 2024, was tasked with improving efficiency and profitability. The 2024 annual report was a significant opportunity to reassure investors of the business’s resilience and longer-term growth potential.

It was also an opportunity to explain how the business planned to address the ongoing operational challenges associated with complex legacy sites, and return it to profitability.

As a housebuilder whose commitment to sustainability is a key part of its investment proposition, it was also important to demonstrate to investors how it will achieve its goal of net zero GHG emissions by 2045.

In developing the strategic report narrative, it was important to prominently communicate the internal and external challenges facing the business, as well as the new CEO’s five-year growth plans. A dedicated Q&A following the CEO’s statement was an opportunity to increase transparency by including responses to probable investor questions.

To reassure investors of the strong investment proposition we introduced a clear, visually impactful investment case upfront in the report emphasising business resilience.

We refreshed the business model description, describing how sustainability is integrated in all business activities, and added new insight into how financial resources are managed.

We developed the market environment section to include the key risks and opportunities associated with external market conditions.

The Section 172 statement included increased clarity around what stakeholders want and how expectations are being addressed.

A new climate transition plan overview was introduced, including a description of short, medium and long-term GHG emissions targets and key actions over the coming year.

Throughout, the report is notably more accessible and succinct. A landscape format enables screen-friendly viewing while illustration helps to bring content to life. An intuitive report structure with interactive navigation and clear information hierarchy aids readers in finding information quickly.
